To address the skills gap, the Government has pledged to create 3 million apprenticeships by 2020. The introduction of the Apprenticeship Levy aims to support this with the intention of putting businesses at the heart of training and allowing them to recruit, develop and build future talent from within their organisation.
Invest Newcastle, in partnership with CBI, are hosting an event for those keen to understand more about what the upcoming apprenticeship reforms mean for their business, and more specifically, how the reforms have the potential to revolutionise their future workforce.
Attendees will hear from CBI’s Senior Policy Adviser for Education and Skills, Ed Richardson, an expert business advisor on apprenticeships and the Levy, and Skills Specialist Gareth Preece from the Department for International Trade (DIT) around talent attraction and the true benefits of recruiting apprentices. Two senior figures from local businesses will then share their experiences of the development of their industry-leading apprenticeship schemes and the advantages they brought to the organisation.
A panel session, facilitated by NewcastleGateshead Initiative Chair John Marshall, will follow and will include Ivan Jepson, Director of BD at Gateshead College, a local apprenticeship training provider, and Jeremey Campbell, Head of Corporate Affairs at Manpower in his role as Levy subject matter expert and employment advisor to Government.

Stephen Hall – Newcastle Partner, Deloitte – Professional services experience of engaging apprentices
Stephen Hall is office senior partner in Newcastle for Deloitte, the world’s largest professional services organisation.
Deloitte in the UK employs over 16,000 people and in 2016 hired over 1,000 graduates. Alongside the graduate scheme though Deloitte offers two apprenticeship schemes – an entry level scheme aimed at business support and a BrightStart scheme where apprentices work and learn alongside graduates in the five core business areas – Audit, Consulting, Financial Advisory, Risk Advisory and Tax Consulting. As well as a professional qualification obtained via classroom study and e-learning, a BrightStart apprentice will gain invaluable experience on the job, have 1:1 coaching, a designated Deloitte appraiser, mentor and buddy to provide support at work, and the technical and skills training needed to develop a sustainable professional career.
Stephen will outline Deloitte’s approach to recruitment, the development of its apprenticeship schemes and the lessons to date.
