A highlight of the annual EAT! NewcastleGateshead food festival, teams of cake makers will descend on Sage Gateshead on Monday 26 August to create a 100m2 edible map of NewcastleGateshead as part of EAT! festival event, Cake City.
Amateur and professional cake makers have been busy making well known monuments from across NewcastleGateshead out of sponge, chocolate, icing, biscuit and lots of other mouth-watering ingredients. St. James’ Park, Saltwell Towers, Fenwick department store, Jesmond Dene, Central Station and Tyneside Cinema are just some of the 60-plus sites that will make up the edible Cake City map that will sit on the concourse of Sage Gateshead.
Tesco Extra at Gateshead Trinity Square has sponsored a special community cake which is being made by Tyneside Women’s Health (www.tynesidewomenshealth.org.uk) and The Avenues Project (www.theavenuesproject.co.uk). Both groups will have a hand in making an edible version of the new Tesco Extra development that will take pride of place on the Cake City map when the event takes place on Monday 26 August.
Marc Smith, Store Manager at Tesco Extra Gateshead Trinity Square said: “We have a commitment to support our local community and linking with NewcastleGateshead Initiative and the EAT! team has enabled us to work with local organisations and help put Trinity Square on the map! The Cake City event is brilliant for the area as numerous organisations and individuals can work together and celebrate everything great about their region before tucking into their wonderful creations.
“We are delighted that as a store we have been able to connect with Tyneside Women’s Health and The Avenues Project and provide them with the opportunity, which may otherwise not have been available to them, to work with an expert pastry chef and create a cake of Gateshead’s newest landmark. We look forward to seeing the results and will proudly display the Trinity Square Cake at the store so more of the community can see the creation after the event in August.”
Simon Preston, festival director of NewcastleGateshead Initiative said: “In previous years we’ve seen thousands of people come and enjoy the construction of the Cake City map and I’m sure this year will be the same. It’s a great family event and the finished map really is something to behold.
“All the bakers involved in making the buildings go to so much effort it’s fantastic to see so many people come and support them. Without their talent, passion and commitment there wouldn’t be an event so I’d like to thank all of them for taking part this year.
“We’re extremely proud to be working with Tyneside Women’s Health, The Avenue’s Project and Tesco on our community cake, which fittingly is the newest building to emerge in the NewcastleGateshead skyline, Tesco Extra in Trinity Square Gateshead.”
As well as the Cake City map, there will be picnic stalls, street food and lots of foodie fun and games. BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art will also be hosting Art in the Park in Baltic Square.
Cake City, part of EAT! NewcastleGateshead, takes place on Monday 26 August from 12noon-17:00 on the concourse of Sage Gateshead. Tickets are priced at £5 for adults and £3 for children under 16. For more information and to book tickets, visit www.eatnewcastlegateshead.com
