INNSiDE Newcastle, part of Meliá Hotels International, has announced an exciting new art partnership with the renowned Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, launching on 1 April. This year-round partnership will see Baltic transform the INNSiDE Newcastle gallery space into a vibrant hub for contemporary creativity, offering guests and visitors the opportunity to experience world-class art in a dynamic new setting
From 1 April to 30 June 2025, the hotel’s dedicated gallery space will showcase an inspiring selection of contemporary artworks curated by Baltic featured artist Jimmy Turrell – an acclaimed Newcastle-born artist and video director known for his bold hybrid techniques combining collage, printmaking, and photography. Turrell’s work has been exhibited internationally in Tokyo, Paris, Berlin, and London, and he has collaborated with major music icons including Elvis, The Chemical Brothers, and Aretha Franklin.
Jimmy Turrell’s new work “Off the Record, On the Pitch” is based on two of Turrell’s main influences – music and football. This exhibition will be a dynamic, immersive space where the worlds of music and football collide through the lens of collage. Expect a vibrant mix of large-scale works combining vintage football imagery, punk aesthetics, bold typography, and layered textures that reference everything from match-day fanzines to classic album covers. The exhibition will be split into two interconnected zones:
The Sonic Side – A celebration of music’s raw energy, featuring collages that deconstruct iconic record sleeves, gig posters, and lyrics, fused with personal nostalgia and cultural movements.
The Beautiful Game – Football’s rich visual history is reimagined through a remix of archival photos, ticket stubs, and old-school kit graphics. The works will reflect the tribalism, passion, and DIY spirit of the terraces, with references to everything from ’90s Serie A aesthetics to underground fanzines.
This unique collaboration aligns with INNSiDE Newcastle’s #StayCurious ethos, which seeks to immerse guests in the city’s rich cultural landscape by connecting them with local creatives and artistic expression. All featured artworks will be available to purchase online via Baltic Shop, making it easy for art lovers to bring home a piece of Newcastle’s creative talent.
Sara Ley, Head of Trading at Baltic commented:
“We are excited that Baltic is forging a partnership with INNSiDE Newcastle who share our strong commitment to supporting and showcasing local artists. We look forward to presenting work from the great creative talent we have within the city on the other side of the quayside. The presentations will rotate throughout the year and people will be able to purchase the work and bring art into their homes.”
Katie Cunningham, General Manager of INNSiDE Newcastle, commented:
“At INNSiDE we are committed to showing our guests everything that’s great about Newcastle, from championing local businesses to connecting with the city’s thriving creative communities.
