Largest educational research conference descends on NewcastleGateshead

The British Educational Research Association (BERA), has today (15th September 2016) announced it will host its 2018 Annual Conference in NewcastleGateshead – the largest conference of its kind in the UK.

Following the international associations Annual Conference in Leeds this year and Brighton in 2017, BERA has announced it will return to Northern England in 2018, bringing 900 delegates to NewcastleGateshead. The conference will be held at Northumbria University from 11 – 13 September.

BERA Conference is held annually, bringing together educational researchers, practitioners and enthusiasts from across the UK and internationally to present new research, debate key issues and network with one another to further develop their research interests.

Marie Blythe, events manager at BERA, said: “Over 900 delegates attend BERA Conference every year and the diverse nature of attendees coupled with the specific requirements needed for hosting a conference of such large scale and scope means BERA Conference Committee must be confident in a destination before selecting it as the official host city for the event. Newcastle’s atmosphere, friendliness, exceptional hospitality and inspiring heritage makes the city an exceptional venue to host the ‘must-do’ event of the educational research community’s year. We were last in Newcastle in 1989, and we are delighted to return to host our 43rd annual conference.”

Paul Szomoru, head of business tourism at NewcastleGateshead Initiative, said: “We are thrilled that BERA has chosen to return to the North of England and hold its 2018 Annual Conference in NewcastleGateshead.

“Conferences and events such as these have a significant impact on our local research eco-system, bringing expertise and knowledge sharing into the city. Furthermore delegates go on to become ambassadors for the city, telling their colleagues, family and friends about their experience – 91% of delegates surveyed say they plan to return to NewcastleGateshead as a leisure visitor.”

BERA is a member-led charity that exists to encourage educational research and its application for the improvement of practice and public benefit. BERA has expanded into an internationally renowned association with UK and non-UK based members.
