National Stottie Cake Week back for a second year

A week long celebration of the North East’s treasured baked delicacy the Stottie Cake is back for a second year!

National Stottie Week, the brainchild of local bakery The Big River Bakery, will see lots of stottie related fun across NewcastleGateshead from Mon 24th Feb to Sat 1st March.

What is a stottie cake we hear you ask? It’s a type of bread that’s round, flat and baked at the bottom of an oven resulting in a deliciously soft yet chewy texture. It gets its name from the Geordie word ‘stot’ – meaning ‘to bounce’ – as traditionally a perfectly cooked stottie should bounce when dropped. The beloved breadstuff is a staple of North East cuisine and best enjoyed with ham and pease pudding (Geordie version of hummus!) or dipped in a hearty soup.

The week-long event will see the launch of a special Stottie Beer in partnership with Firebrick Brewery. The new beer, which uses waste from stotties, will be launched on Mon at Newcastle’s Grainger Market and the public is invited to come along and sample the new creation between 1pm and 4pm.

For the younger members of the family there’s lots of activities planned to keep them entertained during the half term. They can join Scotty the Stottie at a series of free story times being held at venues across Newcastle including Seven Stories; Baltic and Home Group’s headquarters at One Strawberry Lane.

Big River Bakery, based in Shieldfield, will also be hosting a FREE online Stottie Bake on Thurs 27th Feb via their TikTok and Facebook channels.

There’ll also be free giveaways everyday of the celebration and you can also get your hands on a Stottie Power T-Shirt.
