Newcastle’s strengths in healthcare and academia have attracted a specialist conference in paediatric dentistry to the region.
The British Society of Paediatric Dentistry (BSPD) Annual Scientific Conference 2023 will take place 14th and 15th September, with an additional Teachers’ Study Day taking place on the 13th.
Hosted on Northumbria University’s City Campus East, the theme for the conference is “tipping the scales” which will focus on making a better and fairer world for children in the future.
NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau, part of NewcastleGateshead Initiative (NGI), worked with the society academics to secure the conference taking place in the North East.
Jen Rea, Head of Business Events and Travel Trade, said:
“The BSPD conference will see hundreds of leading academics and practitioners come together in the city and will provide an excellent opportunity for Newcastle to showcase its strengths in this sector as well as facilitating the sharing of expertise and best practice to continue to advance oral health care for children in our communities.
“It has been a pleasure working alongside the organisers, academics and venues to help bring this fantastic event to the region.”
The annual conference rotates across the UK and this year, will bring approximately 400 delegates to Newcastle city centre.
Oliver Summer, Local Organising Committee Chair, Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said:
“Newcastle was chosen as the conference host city because it is a friendly and welcoming city, and to build on the success of 2012 when we last hosted the BSPD conference. The Northern Branch of BSPD is based in Newcastle and we wanted to show off and highlight the city to our national (and international) colleagues.
“The Child Dental Health Department at Newcastle Dental Hospital is one of the biggest and busiest in the UK, providing specialist paediatric dentistry to the children of the North East and Cumbria.
“We enjoy an excellent link with Newcastle University Dental School, training dentists of the future, and collaborating in research and innovation. We were one of the first units in the country to introduce Silver Diamine Fluoride, a new and innovative minimally invasive treatment for decayed primary teeth in young children.”
The conference will include sessions focusing on rebuilding and innovating within healthcare, and speakers will cover topics such as equality within dentalcare and sustainability within the industry.
