A Newcastle-based band will be taking centre stage at The Glittering North this autumn, giving fans an extra chance to see them perform live before the end of their 28-year career.
Members of the Baghdaddies, an exuberant band which showcases world music including Balkan melodies, ska and sizzling brass with theatrical humour, will be taking over the Dutch Barn during Raby Castle, Park and Garden’s immersive and unforgettable new event this autumn.
Adorned with lights, flags, bunting and barrels, the whooping and whirling folk musicians will be playing fiddles and brass to bring sounds of the past to life, whilst captivating fire performers dazzle the crowds in a never-seen-before spectacle of live music, dance and puppetry – which all comes alive after dark.
Dancing upon a large table in the newly restored event space, the band is set to enthral audiences with their foot-stomping music accompanied by their theatrical and immersive performances to wow visitors of all ages, whilst celebrating the region’s Norse and Viking heritage.
This will be the Baghdaddies’ final year as the band brings its impressive career to an end this December – and the shows at The Glittering North will be some of their last ever performances.
Ziad Jabero from the Baghdaddies said: “We always enjoy injecting a theatrical performance into our sets, thanks to our extensive street theatre show background, so being able to do this at The Glittering North is right up our street.
“Raby Castle, Park and Garden’s new offering is something incredibly exciting for our region and is going to be great for the north east – and we’re so pleased to be a part of it. We love performing in amazing events such as this.”
Taking over the grounds of Raby Castle, The Glittering North brings to life iconic figures from the past with enchanting puppetry and illuminating light art.
A ‘trail of the north’ is set to take over the remodelled 18th century Walled Garden in a light-filled experience of stories and performance and will be full of illuminated photo opportunities, a glittering immersive space dripping with gold and a spectacular recreation of the northern lights.
In this mythical new world, visitors can also take a moment to unwind and listen to tales of folklore and myth, Norse gods and shapeshifting beasts, whilst keeping warm with a hot chocolate and blankets.
Sophie Brown, sales and events manager at Raby Estate said: “The Glittering North is going to be a captivating event for all the senses – there will be illuminations, the chance to get up close and touch the magnificent puppets, the smells of autumn through the castle’s garden and delicious warming treats to tuck into for a truly perfect evening.
“The event wouldn’t be complete without the unmistakable sound of the Baghdaddies ricocheting through the castle grounds, and everyone is in for a real treat as they witness their upbeat sound and infectious stage presence.”
Visitors can step into the Glittering North at Raby Castle, Park and Gardens from the 12th, 13th, 19th, 29th, 26th, 27th, 30th, 31st October and the 1st, 2nd, 3rd November. Tickets are available at £20 for adults and £13 for children.
