The creator of some of the North East’s most recognisable street art will be selling his work at an Art Car Boot Fair this summer – alongside an 11-year-old artist who has been inspired by his work.
Alex Mulholland, known as Mul, creates distinctive murals and motifs which can be spotted in and around the North East and as far afield as Bristol and Barcelona.
Mul will be one of more than 60 artists selling work at the one-day event on Sunday 14 July at Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, as will 11-year-old Taye Benjamin, who earlier this year became the youngest person to have work exhibited as part of Baltic’s open submission exhibition.
Sara Ley, head of trading at Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, explained: “Mul himself was inspired to become an artist after visiting Spank the Monkey, an exhibition of street art here at Baltic in 2006 and now Taye, who’s known as Terox, is taking his first steps as an artist after taking inspiration from people like Mul.
“They’ll be here along with artists working across a huge range of styles and mediums, from jewellers and ceramicists to painters and photographers. It’s a chance to pick up something special and support some brilliant artists.”
The Art Car Boot Fair is part of Baltic’s Summer Sizzler Weekend which will also include behind-the-scenes tours, artist talks and artist-led workshops.
“There will be so much going on over the weekend, and everything will be free entry,” said Sara. “The Art Car Boot Fair is on the Sunday and it will go ahead whatever the weather.”
“Mul will have limited edition screen prints available and, the last time he sold his work at an event like this it sold out within minutes so we’re expecting these prints to be equally in-demand.”
Other artists who will have work on sale include painter and printmaker Alfons Bytautas; pen and ink artist Hannah Corbett; jeweller Lindsay Forbes; and ceramicist Danielle Pilling.
Also on sale will be materials, catalogues and posters from previous Baltic exhibitions and there will be live DJ sets from Deja Brew and food and drink stalls.
