Support North East tourism this English Tourism Week

English Tourism Week takes place from 22-31 May this year. The annual event, led by Visit England, aims to celebrate and showcase the vibrant and diverse sector and its significant contribution to the UK’s visitor economy.

This year we are encouraging our partners and stakeholders to get involved and show your support to our region’s tourism industry and highlight the importance of the sector in our country’s Covid recovery. At NewcastleGateshead Initiative, we will be using the week to engage with stakeholders and key decision makers in the region in conversations about the value of our tourism offering and how they can support the sector’s recovery after a devastating year. We will also be launching this year’s North East Tourism Awards, sharing tourism business resources and celebrating the investment and innovation that we have seen in the sector over the past year.

Supporting businesses and shining a light on our tourism sector

During English Tourism Week 2021, NewcastleGateshead Initiative invites you to celebrate the vast contribution our tourism industry makes to the regional economy and to hear more about how NGI and how the region will support and shine a light on the sector as we head towards economic recovery.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic had a devastating impact on tourism in the UK and worldwide, continuing to affect both the domestic and international sectors, in 2019, tourism was one of England’s largest and most valuable industries and will be one of the main drivers of economic recovery. In what has been a very challenging year for the sector, it has never been so important to be here for tourism.

This event will reflect on the challenges of the past 12 months, highlight reasons to look forward with optimism – including investment and support for our industry, recovery campaigns and large-scale events.

Speakers include industry experts Kate Nicholls, CEO from UK Hospitality, a trade association representing the interests of the UK’s hospitality sector and Kurt Janson, Director of the Tourism Alliance, an organisation that lobby government on key strategic issues facing the sector. They will both give an update on their work as strong voices for the sector, highlighting the importance of tourism to society and the economy.

They will be joined by Calum Manekshaw, Hotel Resident Manager at INNSiDE by Meliá Newcastle and Jim Mawdsley, Principal Advisor Events and Culture at Newcastle City Council who will give an update on the plans for major events following his recent attendance at the UK’s first mask-free concert.
