The Christmas getaway gets underway at Newcastle International Airport

After welcoming 4.9 million passengers in 2023, Newcastle International Airport is preparing for over 75,000 travellers to pass through its terminal over the coming festive period – between 24th December and 1st January 2024.

With family and friends set to be reunited for Christmas and sun-seekers escaping the chilly weather for warmer climates, passengers from the North East will be celebrating the festivities across the globe in destinations including Perth, Toronto, Dubai and Tenerife.

To help get passengers and staff in the festive spirit, Fenwick has brought its famous window display to the Airport check-in concourse with a Christmas Tree partnership, as well as a selection of seasonal food and drink being served in Greggs and Starbucks.

Nick Jones, Chief Executive Officer at Newcastle International Airport, said: “With many families and friends reuniting over the festive period, Christmas is a special time of year at Newcastle International Airport.

“We are delighted to be ending 2023 as an award-winning Airport for the second consecutive year, and we look forward to welcoming more passengers to our best-in-class customer experience.”

This year has been another successful year for Newcastle International, with the announcement of two new airlines – AEGEAN, Greece’s flagship carrier, and SunExpress, a joint venture between Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines.

Alongside new airlines, Newcastle International Airport was awarded global ‘Airport of the Year’ in the less than five million passengers category at the 2023 Routes World Conference.

The Airport has continued to invest in its passenger experience with a multi-million-pound refurbishment of all catering outlets, the security search area and executive lounge expected to be completed ahead of next summer.

2023 also saw the Airport named sustainability sector leader in the 2023 GRESB infrastructure assessment, which recognised the North East Airport’s Net Zero 2035 roadmap, including the procurement of 100% renewable electricity and the launch of the solar farm – which is capable of supplying 100% of the Airport’s electricity requirements on a sunny day.
