Young children invited to takeover Discovery Museum for British Science Week
Media release, Discovery Museum, 21 February 2025
Families with young children are invited to take over the first floor of Discovery Museum in the popular Tiny Sparks Takeover free-style interactive event on Friday 14 March from 10am – 12.30pm.
The event is specially devised by Early Years experts at Discovery Museum for children aged 33 months – 5 years old. Tickets cost £3 + booking fee per child. To book, visit https://discoverymuseum.org.uk/whats-on/tiny-sparks-takeover-bsw-2025.
This large-scale event is a chance for families with young children to explore the museum in ways they’ve never experienced before, with multiple play stations throughout the galleries facilitated by dedicated Early Years staff from Discovery Museum and other North East Museums’ venues Great North Museum: Hancock, Stephenson Steam Railway, and the team behind the Boxes of Delights loan handling boxes.
Amy Baird, Learning Coordinator and Early Years lead at Discovery Museum, said:
“The Tiny Sparks Takeovers are a wonderful way for young children and their grown-ups to experience the museum. There is plenty of space for the children to roam, and many hands-on activities to stimulate developing brains and excite curiosity. We want as many young families as possible to come and enjoy the museum in new, exciting ways.”
To celebrate British Science Week 2025 and as part of the programme for Steam to Green: A North East Energy Revolution all activities will be Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts or Mathematics (STEAM) themed.
Some of the activities on offer include building and constructing, dressing up, colouring, sorting, counting, handling museums objects and much more.
The event is created for children from age 33 months to five years, but younger siblings are welcome too. Babies go free. Any enquiries about the event should go to learning@discoverymuseum.org.uk.
The Tiny Sparks Takeover is a highlight in the annual Tiny Sparks programme at the museum. The smaller scale Tiny Sparks sessions are currently on a weekly basis during term time [https://discoverymuseum.org.uk/whats-on/discovery-museum-tiny-sparks ]
